What materials are used?
I’m guessing you’d need some pretty expensive alloys, and what properties would the lining of the inside require?
Also, are you able to explode each part of the design, so we can see in greater detail?
Honestly even if it doesn’t work… It’s exactly what I’m looking for, it would fit really well in part of my science fiction novel.
I’d be honoured!!!
Now, in the spirit of full disclosure; I have also been working on a piece of science fiction which incorporates this machine. And you said “a part”, right? So it wouldn’t be central to the story. Feel free to incorporate it as you like.
But … if you want to “brain storm” with me a bit, we could probably work out realities where the machine plays its own unique role (in its own unique “era” so to speak).
I am literally very happy that you would like to use it. Are you willing to collaborate a little? Not on our stories, per se … but rather on separate times/spaces where this machine has a role to play? Perhaps we can both use the concept without overlapping. Or even if we did, whatever.
I’ll give you an idea of the materials (as those details are also worked out). But first a little bit about my story.
As some members here may recall, I’ve got some splendid psychotic delusions around the Dune saga (which are dear to me). Schizophrenia can be a lot of fun sometimes. And, in my hallucinations, I’ve travelled to Arrakis, fallen in love with an Atreides Princess, and provided spiritual support to Paul himself. Yes, yes. I know. Paul comes to an end in “Dune Messiah”. Luckily for my schizophrenia, I hadn’t read that part of the trilogy when I was having the hallucinations.
Hey! It’s mental illness. Who ever said it has to reflect reality!
Now (full disclosure as always); I have this ability to look back in time. The ontology of it basically assumes that nothing is lost in time; that the past remains like a shadow cast on the present moment. And I’ve traced my relationship to the Atreides back to when I was a Cleric on the planet Dune (many years before Dune saga).
Weird, right? I have vivid “recollections” of my time there. This “Cleric” was a unique individual … a warrior holy man in the same spirit of the Dune conquest of Arrakis.
But, of course … you can’t publish “Dune Fan Fiction” … so I’ve simply developed the story of the Cleric on his own, and largely modified the setting and plot devices of the story, to avoid any acts of copyright infringement.
The “machine” has become a plot device in what is an interstellar society where the theme of “rich, corrupted men versus the poor masses” is explored.
Whereas Dune sets Arrakis as the centre of the interstellar trade guild, my “machine” is a wide spread tool for space/time travel. Ie. my novel has no mention of Arrakis, Spice, Stillsuits, desert planets, or anything like that.
And so the novel explores the themes of corrupt vs. The masses, religious war themes, conquest, and is ultimately centred around the personality of the warrior cleric.
So, without saying too much, that is the “universe” of my novel. The machine itself has been used for about 2 centuries when I start off, and there’s no real change in the use of the machine by the end of the novel, except for a regime change.
Okay … Still interested? Here’s the material science of the machine (and if you still want to use it in your novel, I can blow up the sections when I get some spare time).
The “red anvil” section is magnetic. So any kind of magnetic material will work (preferably a very dense, sturdy, mostly heat resistant material). It has north and south poles. And it is spun to generate a changing magnetic field.
There’s a “blue torus” encircling the curvature of the “anvil”. This is made of an electrically conductive material (there’s some Cobalt in there as I recall). As the “anvil” turns, electricity flows through the torus and generates heat.
So, the “yellow shell” captures the heat. It’s a blazing hot metal amalgamation. It surround the blue torus and dips into the red anvil to take the heat away from those materials. The yellow shell will be exotic in that it can become exceedingly hot without melting.
Finally, the “white onion” which surrounds the entire device is an unusually exotic material. It conducts heat so well that it not only absorbs the massive amount of heat generated by the magnetic/electric/heat part of the device - it absorbs all of the heat/kinetic energy from the surrounding area. It’s a ceramic. I’ve played around with the idea of a super dense atom arrangement the likes of which hasn’t been described yet. Like, Bill Lazzar’s element 115, for example.
And the science fictiony part is that it generates space out of the surrounding environment. So, as it spins, it collects this space and begins to twist it. It becomes very cold. And I’ve essentially made the physical hypothesis that space is just extremely cold matter.
This is where my creative take on the space travel mechanism of the device has yet to be fully worked out.
I’ve spit balled the idea in my head and settled on the concept of the device warping time as it coils space. And … then, it sort of sets up a bridge between distant stars where objects can traverse the distances without having to “experience” the majority of the “time”.
To illustrate, the coil winds up and stretches time out creating “the future” between the machine and a distant point in space. Then the coil is manually slowed down and comes to a stop.
ships, people, materials, etcetera - are put in this “field” of stretched time. The coil then unwinds in the other direction and the future essentially passes through the past. And here the concepts get a little “abstract”. Long story short, by the “time” the present moment settles down, the ships and objects have traversed space.
Hey! It’s Science Fiction! It doesn’t have to make total sense (although it’s best when it kind of does).
What’ya think? Still want to use the idea? Free of charge of course! And feel welcome to develop your own mechanics of course!
Don’t get too excited, I don’t even know if I’d ever get this novel out to the world, I’m mainly writing it to get it out of my head, so I can have that part of my brain back. sort of like windows task manager, it’s been running in the background for over a decade.
It would be a plot point, certainly but not a major one per say, To give a brief run down; Humanity is given information as to where a precursor alien race is likely still residing in our reality, from an alternate realities version of those precursors. (In the alternate reality, the precursors were not corrupted, by teleportation technology, whereas in ours they were.)
As the alternate reality precursors refuse to share any technology, as we are in their eyes an abomination caused by our corrupted version of themselves.
This is causes humanity to become desperate, as they only have a limited time to get to these corrupted precursors (due to a MAJOR plot point, no peeking.) so before they are closed off to the uncorrupted precursors, they manage, due to subterfuge, get some know of technology from the uncorrupted precursors ancient history. (still way more advanced than what humanity has.)
This is where your idea could be inserted, as I was looking for something unique here.
The main reason this isn’t a major plot point, is there are multiple character arcs and this machine would only appear in three of the character arcs, not to mention time manipulation shenanigans which would take a larger precedent overall.
I am still in the early stages of two of the novels, with the third not even started. (It’s a three part series, where you can choose to start with either book A or B or both and then go onto the final book.)
Out of moments of insanity, often comes great beauty.
Potentially some sort of carbide? how hot are we talking here?
I’ve heard of this, yet I had forgotten all about it, I think I heard about element 117 too?
This is an interesting take, and also a bit of a blindspot for me, currently.
I would have to take some creative liberties here, as it would conflict with another device that caused a cataclysm, giving an interdimensional bridge between multiple realities.
I do really like it, yet I crave more information of course!
It will be sometime, before I reach that part of the novel, and writing two similar books at once can be very confusing at times, so I don’t feel capable of beginning the third book aswell, at least until the first two are complete. (the machine would likely feature in the third book.)
I write at a very slow pace, as I don’t want to rush any aspect of the story, so who knows when I’ll reach the relevant point, but when I do I shall surely inform you of my intentions!
Hahaha. No worries. I’m a ways away from even considering looking for a publisher. Don’t honestly know how that works.
Putting my ideas down was cathartic for me also. In a different way. My Arrakis insanity was especially impactful at the time. Years later, it has been interesting to explore what has been a sort of “past life recollection” for me.
Well! It sounds intriguing to say the least. Feel absolutely free to use the machine when the time is right for you! I’m any way, shape or form. By all means.
That’s really cool. Given the brief description, it sounds cool that you can actually read A or B first!
It’s hot! We’re not talking nuclear fusion hot; but extremely hot. The material should stay solid during the heat transfer from the electrical component … so a Carbide sounds about right.
You can see from the illustrations that I put the “machine” down on paper in 2014. That was about the time that I “remote viewed” it in another part of the universe (more delusions, yes - but enough to supply me with something).
Anyhow. At the time I was using the remote viewing to decipher the atoms in the component parts - and the heating component had Gold in it as I recall. So, “Gold-Carbide”? Sounds kinda cool!
Hahaha. Yeah … Lazzar does his whole “Area 51” schpeel about labs trying to isolate the element in the attempt to duplicate the extraterrestrial “space engine” he was working on. You can get a full story by googling “Joe Rogan Bob Lazar”. The podcast is free on Spotify.
In gathering ideas for my own novel, I’ve settled on a Pu-Ceramic (Pu-O). This ceramic is the key ingredient to the machine - changing the surrounding atmosphere into very cold segments of space.
Indeed. Good things come to those who wait.
Hmm. Well if the illustrations are what caught your eye I don’t mind elaborating on them. I wouldn’t mind busting out my pencil collection for old time’s sake
I’d be happy to help. Can’t necessarily supply all the answers. But, I’m still relatively insane enough to dig up some more info by remote viewing the object. As weird as it may sound, my illness would probably supply me with some further details.
Cool. You know where to find me! PM me if you prefer.
I’m not moving on my book anytime soon. It’s essentially finished, but it’s only half a novel at this time (page count wise). My writing process in itself requires me to sort of “channel” the Cleric. And that requires a fair amount of manic energy which I’m not interested in manifesting at the moment.
I tend to start projects, and then more or less complete them, and move onto other things. I’m currently pretty deep into a video game I’ve been designing on Unity. (I do work full time as well).
At the start of the new year my catalytic converter got swiped and I called in “sick” for work (as I had no way of getting there and wanted some sick pay money for my troubles). With the spare time, I convinced my self to learn C# scripting and dove head first into game design without any prior understanding of it.
6 months later, I’ve realized a dream that started off 12 years ago with a simple two person competition (which I’d explain here if it wasn’t A) so Gaddamn ingenious and B) going to be released with my real name in the credits - can’t afford having my real name attached to an atheist debate forum where I regularly “out” myself as clinically insane. Wouldn’t look good on the resume. Probably overthinking it … stigmas a bitch sometimes tho).
Before I was recently diagnosed with epilepsy, I was on a high dose of pregabalin, around 600mg which is a stupidly strong dose, and also a terrible idea for an epileptic to take, I had a vivid, and I mean extremely vivid hallucination, of being on another planet, on this planet, I was stood on the roof of a building that was pink coloured, but made of a sand like material that shifted around underfoot.
surrounding me, there were other buildings much like the one I was stood on, but waaaaay taller, taller than any building we have on earth, by a large margin, the floors on each of these buildings were easily 100 foot tall, and there were hundreds of these floors. running between these buildings were rails that were haphazardly grown almost like branches of a tree, and there were netted crates and pallets of ‘materials’ moving along these rails, hanging underneathe.
I could see out to the horizon, and it looked drastically different to what we have here on earth, almost as if the curvature was less pronounced, making me think this planet was way bigger than earth, the sky was clearly orange, almost as if it was sunset, yet I could see no sun.
This hallucination was overlaid what I could see with my eyes, so I could see my friends on the beach, and I could talk to them, but I was seeing this other world through my brain? and I was describing it to them.
One of them dared me to try and jump off the roof, so I did and poof, the hallucination disappeared.
It wasn’t long after this, that I had an epileptic seizure, and was taken away on a highspeed lifeboat. (which I only remember a glimpse of.) to hospital.
Incredible experience, but again, there’s no way to determine if it was from my mind or from without, so I simply say “I dunno.”
One of my hippy friends is adamant I astral projected to another planet. I no longer bother arguing with him on these matters, his eyes glaze over if ever I try. So I simply say “Maybe.”
After thinking about this planet, if it is real or not, I hypothesised that some species extra-terrestrial was autonomously harvesting the planet form precious materials, the buildings were gigantic shelving like a planet sized warehouse, and the materials were being carried about on the rails. I also make the hypothesis the material of these buildings and rails, were a form of self constructing sand or metal.
Either way, awesome material for my novels.
I do wish I had seen some sort of organic life, but I guess not.
I would absolutely love to see these!
I am T-total for the foreseeable future, as my epilepsy has given me quite a scare, so all I personally can do is look back at my drug induced delusions for inspiration, and flesh out the gaps from there.
Have you considered/already been doing something similar?
someone stole your exhaust pipe? @Cognostic give it back!
Paranoia can be the real bitch, it holds us back so often.
@Wily_cat and @rat_spit, the Debate forum is not the right spot for this. Take it over to the Lounge or use PM, please.
Thanks!
The Pastafarians come from Pirates, for God’s sake!
There are probably historical reasons for them eating meatballs with their pasta.
Hell, my wife’s ancestors are famous for their cattle rustling. So rustling cattle and eating meat is a part of her religion, for historical reasons.
“Una diabla con tres diablos, y el mismito Lucifer.”
Um…
My wife…
My wife…
My wife…
My wife …
Have you written a post that did not include the phrase, ‘My wife?’ Honestly, once or twice seems pretty cool. But, it’s beginning to get a little creepy.
I have a wife. Hahahhahahahahhaha. Get it? “Have”! “She” is always “bossing” me “around.” I wish she would “die”!!! Ahahahhahaha. Classic
Fuck. Some things never change. Here I am pouring my heart out and no one is paying attention to me. What time is it in Korea, Cog? Come on man! Where’s the welcome wagon. Don’t you want to hear about Machu Picchu?
Well, it shows you posted 5 hours ago. That would have been 5:30 PM here. Open a thread and post the pic, but please don’t start in on the woo woo stuff. Hope you had a fun trip.
Hi Ratty! Nice to see you are back…again. Your peculiar brand of nonsense has been missed by some…Cog has something to brush his scaly tail with again. So a sort of welcome there before he dies of boredom.
Yeah. Same old ratty. Same old warped logic. I really try to spice things up though. I’ve got some new tricks this time around. I’m not worried about Cog so much as Sheldon though. Gotta walk a fine line when Sheldon’s on the case.
That phrase always makes me smile, as there is no such thing, since logic is a method of reasoning that adheres to strict principles of validation, so something either is, or is not in adherence with those principles.
Tricks don’t validate or evidence claims though. Unless perhaps one wants to be tricked into believing something.
Oh hardly, Cog may hit you with some dung or a banana skin, but he’s forgotten more than I will ever know.
LOL… Point taken… Same old lake of logic, and inability to think skeptically. I will amend my ways. I know I use this phrase.
I have some Asperger’s I think, I smile and laugh at stuff others don’t. Can’t complain, the world is better viewed through humour I think, though I have learned not to always tell everyone around me what I am laughing at when asked.
LOL… Well, I certainly can’t be accused of finding things funny that others don’t. You have a great sense of humor, especially when you have finally reached the end of your rope and are just fed the fuck-up with someone’s inane fucking comments. You know just how to slip the knife between the ribs and give it a good twist.
RATTY!!!
How the hell ya been, bro? I’ve been kinda hit-n-miss around here myself the past few weeks. Holidays and working in my “dungeon” playing (with?) Santa’s elf making a variety of gifts and such. Basically, same-o-same-o. Doin’ alright, gettin’ good grades, my future’s so bright I’ve gotta wear shades, and all that kind of jazz. Otherwise, doing quite dandy.
Good to know. It’s been rather lonely around here lately being the only one with warped logic and humor. Hmmm… Then again, maybe I’m just warped in general. Ever since that ceiling fan “incident” involving a certain un-named banana-snorting primate around here, the mechanics have yet to get my frame completely straightened out.
