The winter solstice IS an astronomical event that our ancient ancestors observed and celebrated because it marks the end of winter. That meant the end of the bitter cold and the end of starvation and the joyous promise of warmer days ahead and the replenishment of life and crops. Little wonder that every ancient civilization was aware of this important event and paid tribute to the sun and worshiped it as a god.
The ancient Egyptians worshiped their sun god Ra; the ancient Persians worshiped their sun god Mithra; the ancient Romans worshiped their sun god Mithras; the ancient Greeks worshiped their sun god Helios; the ancient Hindus worshiped their sun god Surya; the Celts worshiped their sun god Lugh: the Norse worshiped their sun god Sol; the Aztecs worshiped their sun god Huitzilopochtli; the Incas worshiped their sun god Inti; the Hindus worshiped their sun god Surya; The Mayans worshiped their sun god Kinich Ahau; the Hittites worshiped their sun goddess Arinna.
THAT is pretty good evidence that the latest sun god to be “born” during the winner solstice is just the latest incarnation of a long succession of previous sun gods.

In case you weren’t aware of this fact. Australia is a SOUTHERN country that would have no reason to celebrate a warm, winter solstice. in any case, these isolated aboriginals may not have been such keen observers of the seasons as every other civilization was in the northern hemisphere.

The aboriginals of this distant “upside-down” world may not even have been aware of the sun’s power to predict the seasons, since their pwn sun god “Wuriupamali” (a female) simply traveled across the sky every morning with a lighted torch, with no mention of her announcing the end of winter—or indicating the change of any of the other seasons.
