Errors also occur when religions and other information are transmitted across cultural and language barriers.
Back in the 1990s, a Japanese foreign minister made a speech saying that Japan wanted to have a “hedgehog” approach to defense. When threatened hedgehogs roll up into a ball with their spikes sticking out. Unfortunately the interpreter translated hedgehog as “porcupine”. Porcupines are aggressive and can supposedly shoot their barbs at foes. A country with a porcupine defense would be bristling with missiles primed to fire instantly. Naturally this brought screams of protest from China, Russia, North Korea, etc.
Imagine how easily words like “virgin”, “resurrection”, and even “god” could be mistranslated.
Heh, the moment someone starts peddling assertions about “Islamic science”, i’m reminded of two embarrassing facts.
The first being that their so-called “prophet”, despite purportedly having a fantastic magic entity to provide the requisite information, asserted in the scribblings in question that sperm originates from the peritoneal cavity. This is a basic anatomical error that was known to be wrong by Aristotle, 1,000 years before the requisite mythology existed.
The second being that almost all attempts by the usual suspects, to try and claim that their “prophet” alighted upon scientific discoveries centuries before said discoveries were actually made, constitute examples of the so-called “Texas Sharpshooter Fallacy”. Namely, the drawing of fabricated apologetic “bulls eyes” around the work of others, then claiming that this “proves” that their “prophet” knew things that no 7th century goat herder would ever have known.
Hey C. Welcome back. Long time no see… I have already attempted to extract these miracles of scientific insight that were printed in the Quaran before their time but to no avail. Our Muslim friend has the common sense to remain quiet and allow people to think he is an idiot instead of opening his mouth to prove it. Or so it seems.
There is nothing science in Islam.
As simple it is.
If Muslims were all around then there would have been no newton, no einstein, no space program.
Nothing.
I was a Muslim guy who thought that Islam is scientific but never knew how weak actually it is.
Even terrorists(ok Islam doesn’t promote it) from Islam use weapon made by non muslims.
They are busy in shariah and won’t know what scientific method is.
Scientific method?
Huh! Don’t even talk to a Muslim about it.
Answer will be God knows the best.
They say God will save you from meteor.
Stay on earth and have four wives.
Who are you assuming to think scientifically?
Quran is 100℅ antiscientific.
That’s true today. But in the Islamic Golden Age between the 8th and 14th centuries the Islamic world in places like Baghdad and Cordoda led the world in astronomy, medicine, and mathematics (especially algebra and arithmetic). Knowledge flowing into Medieval Europe through Moorish Spain kick-started Western science. Islamic scholars also saw the value in ancient Greek science and philosophy. Without the House of Learning and the Translation Movement in Baghdad, much of that knowledge would have been lost forever.
Then it all went wrong. Science is fundamentally the study of cause and effect. Islam became dominated by the view that there is no natural cause and effect, and that every event in the world happens discretely through the will of Allah. So Islam degenerated from a religion that valued the pursuit of knowledge to one that rejects everything but a an ancient book of fantasy. It’s one of the great tragedies of history.
It’s actually present tense. Yes, scientific claims made for the Quran are nonsense.
HOWEVER,. Islam actually had a golden age, from the 8th to the 16th century. The full article quoted below is worth reading
The Islamic Golden Age was a period of cultural, economic, and scientific flourishing in the history of Islam, traditionally dated from the 8th century to the 14th century.[1][2][3] This period is traditionally understood to have begun during the reign of the Abbasid caliph Harun al-Rashid (786 to 809) with the inauguration of the House of Wisdom in Baghdad, the world’s largest city by then, where Islamic scholars and polymaths from various parts of the world with different cultural backgrounds were mandated to gather and translate all of the world’s classical knowledge into Arabic and Persian.[4][5] Several historic inventions and significant contributions in numerous fields were made throughout the Islamic middle ages that revolutionized human history.
The period is traditionally said to have ended with the collapse of the Abbasid caliphate due to Mongol invasions and the Siege of Baghdad in 1258.[6] A few scholars date the end of the golden age around 1350 linking with the Timurid Renaissance,[7][8] while several modern historians and scholars place the end of the Islamic Golden Age as late as the end of 15th to 16th centuries meeting with the Age of the Islamic Gunpowders.[1][2][3] (The medieval period of Islam is very similar if not the same, with one source defining it as 900–1300 CE.)[9]
There was also at least one great philosopher, Sadr al din Muhhamad Shirazi, known as: the Mulla Sadr (167th-17 century).
Ṣadr ad-Dīn Muḥammad Shīrāzī , also called Mulla Sadrā (Persian: ملا صدرا; also spelled Molla Sadra , Mollasadra or Sadr-ol-Mote’allehin ; Arabic: صدر المتألهین) (c. 1571/2 – 1640), was an IranianTwelverShi’a and SufiIslamic philosopher, theologian and ‘Ālim who led the Iranian cultural renaissance in the 17th century. According to Oliver Leaman, Mulla Sadra is arguably the single most important and influential philosopher in the Muslim world in the last four hundred years.[1][2]
Though not its founder, he is considered the master of the Illuminationist (or, Ishraghi or Ishraqi) school of Philosophy, a seminal figure who synthesized the many tracts of the Islamic Golden Age philosophies into what he called the Transcendent Theosophy or al-hikmah al-muta’āliyah .
Mulla Sadra brought “a new philosophical insight in dealing with the nature of reality” and created “a major transition from essentialism to existentialism” in Islamic philosophy,[3] although his existentialism should not be too readily compared to Western existentialism. His was a question of existentialist cosmology as it pertained to God, and thus differs considerably from the individual, moral, and/or social, questions at the heart of Russian, French, German, or American Existentialism.
"The Quran does not explicitly forbid images of Muhammad, but there are a few hadith (supplemental teachings) that have explicitly prohibited Muslims from creating visual depictions of figures.[3] It is agreed on all sides that there is no authentic visual tradition (pictures created during Muhammad’s lifetime) as to the appearance of Muhammad, although there are early legends of portraits of him, and written physical descriptions whose authenticity is often accepted.’
If you don’t believe me, go to Google images and type ‘The prophet Muhammad’
And further mathematics is not halal.
Those who studied maths in golden age were actually doing harem, so they weren’t Muslims.
They are same as some Muslims today learning painting and singing.
Maths and science is harem in Islam.
Actually it is what bothered al ghazali.
No one wanted to build a spacecraft to go in space, no Muslim dreamt for that. They fear Allah and won’t do maths for that.
If you are a Muslim you will agree that maths is halal and it’s applications are nursery maths and basic algebra. Islamic territory can’t push further limits.Even upto 12th class math is halal, a phd mathematician is doing harem.
Yeah stop quantum theory it is intefering Allah.
Why to build atom smashers, lasers when Allah know meteor won’t hit until Jesus come.
Why tv, etc.
Why to study maths when we know that Allah exist.
Sorry, that’s called ‘a no true Scotsman’ fallacy, and is incorrect.
All that is needed for a person to become a Muslim is to say with conviction ;“ La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammadur rasoolu Allah,( “There is no true god (deity) but God (Allah),1and Muhammad is the Messenger (Prophet) of God.)” ” one converts to Islam and becomes a Muslim.
A person my not adhere to all five pillars of Islam…That does not necessarily mean he is not a Muslim. It may mean he isn’t a very good Muslim.
Besides, who made you the judge of Muslims or anyone else? Jesus is reported as saying: Matthew 7:5 " Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye. "
The Quran has far more top say about hypocrisy, concluding that God will see inside the heart of the hypocrite.
That is what they think in my area.
I live in ground situation.
Islam works the way I explained to you.
Nursery maths is allowed but not phd maths, no Muslim actually like theortical maths.[besides some ignorant Muslims]
Muhammad didn’t told you about ancient mathematicians and art and craft, he didn’t liked it much instead he stole Biblical stories and nothing else.
Some molvis say he didn’t encourage to study maths why then study it?
Tell me why will you study maths if you are a Muslim?
Any reason.
Stop referencing to golden age.
Islam is what Muhammad taught not what people do?
Most likely the same as becoming a Christian is either “letting Jesus into your heart” …
Hey Cranky, using your reasoning, does this mean that when the Catholic Church took the lead in European affairs and royalty, etc, that we CAN thank them for the works of Leonardo DaVinci, and Galileo and;
If not the CHURCH then hey, the bible and Christians are awesome, cause if they weren’t Christian then none of this could have been invented?
PEOPLE invent things. All around the world we have tribal societies contributing to the whole of mankind’s knowledge…
Islam is the religion.
Christianity is the religion.
If you are discussing the Middle East, fine - people in the Middle East invented and they were Islamic HOWEVER like the “bible”, where in the fuck is the recipe for their gunpowder in the Quran?
I was used the term ‘the golden age of Islam,’ because that’s how I think of it and how a specific period in a specific area is described by scholars. Many of the great minds were Muslim .
The intellectual life of Islam petered around the 14th century and has never recovered.
"The Islamic Golden Age was a period of cultural, economic, and scientific flourishing in the history of Islam, traditionally dated from the 8th century to the 14th century.[1][2][3] This period is traditionally understood to have begun during the reign of the Abbasid caliph Harun al-Rashid (786 to 809) with the inauguration of the House of Wisdom in Baghdad, the world’s largest city by then, where Islamic scholars and polymaths from various parts of the world with different cultural backgrounds were mandated to gather and translate all of the world’s classical knowledge into Arabic and Persian.[4][5] Several historic inventions and significant contributions in numerous fields were made throughout the Islamic middle ages that revolutionized human history.
---------------- New technology[edit]
A manuscript written on paper during the Abbasid Era.
With a new and easier writing system, and the introduction of paper, information was democratized to the extent that, for probably the first time in history, it became possible to make a living from only writing and selling books.[47] The use of paper spread from China into Muslim regions in the eighth century, arriving in Al-Andalus on the Iberian peninsula (modern Spain and Portugal) in the 10th century. It was easier to manufacture than parchment, less likely to crack than papyrus, and could absorb ink, making it difficult to erase and ideal for keeping records. Islamic paper makers devised assembly-line methods of hand-copying manuscripts to turn out editions far larger than any available in Europe for centuries.[48] It was from these countries that the rest of the world learned to make paper from linen.[49]"
There’s heaps more if you’re interested, both on Google and YouTube.
I understand that it’s perhaps counter intuitive. Neither the best or worst behaviour usually defines an individual. Neither does being a devout Xian, Muslim or Jew.
Religions always reflect the culture which invented them and individuals which practice them. A lifetime observation has led me to believe that religious belief has always been used to motivate the very worst and the very best in human behaviour.
I agree that Middle East countries contributed greatly to mankind’s knowledge. It’s not perhaps, you per se, I take issue with but perhaps the crediting of Muslims (as a religious grouping, Islamic) with their golden age -
Title of Era
The bible records certain moral advances in human history - do these belong to Jews? Were there other cultures prior or at the same time that also made these sociable advances?
Too often the religious groupings take credit as “proof” of gods backing when in FACT, there wasn’t much choice for the people to operate outside of the religion - they controlled the politics, education and monetary systems.
Call it Islamic - yup - I take issue (my opinion) however, it is as Islamic as Da Vinci was “Catholic”
Professing Catholicism in 15th century Italy was like professing Nazism in 1930s Germany. It was good for your health. I think Leonardo was far too smart to have believed their crap.
that’s so kind of you and you don’t need to apologize because its not your fault. I am not strong enough right now to be honest I feel so weak with no confidence because I am still living with them and still have to hear-see-bear their abuse till now. I am trying my best to live and survive since I left islam. I will make sure that they be so sorry for treating me that way in future.
Thank you David. I am not sharing my experience to get sympathy. its a lesson I feel obliged to tell people about the truth so they know the reality about Islamic life and how it ruins a lot of women lives. I am one of millions, there a lot of Muslim women and girls are suffering silently. some will be lucky to run away and start a new life while others cant do it because of the laws in their countries. I have an atheist Saudi woman friend, who lives in village and she cant run away, because the airport is so far and her father can complain to police if she is absent for few hours, so airport will stop her from travelling because of that law.
Believe me I am crying more everyday when I meet women in social media asking for help with worst conditions and no one help them, because the government and laws are beside males, so if they try to complain they either will be forced to draw it by their family members under threat & violence or they will be killed.
Please do not live with hate in your heart. It can consume and destroy you from within, and corrupt your decisions.
Does that sound like something from a holy book? Yes, but it is just common sense and an understanding of basic psychology. I do not need divine guidance to understand that. Yes, there are terrible people who use religion to do horrible things to people.
I too have people from my past who have done me wrong. But I do not carry resentment or hate, but neither do I forgive them, I just put them in my past. Each day is a wonder, each day is to be enjoyed without the burden of resentment or hate.
If I carry any hate in my heart, it is against religion in general, a primitive practice that does cause harm. That is the enemy.
