Proof Qualification Validity (question for atheists)

That’s the closet explanation I can think of. But since that life probably just ends I want to leave a piece of me behind, that’s why I write the stories I write.

Yes

Is a great movie.

So let me get this straight… a god that cannot be perceived by anyone, requires faith alone?!

Sounds like some peak utter bollocks if you ask me!

How is it rational to believe in something you can never percieve, is completely unevidenced and requires really wanting it to be true?

Sorry mate; Tu quo que.

Atheism is about a non belief in god(s). Period. By definition, there is no such thing an atheist discovery.

Atheism simply describes something about me. It does not define me

IF God existed, which I contend he does not then the proof would be painfully obvious. He should reveal himself. If not, then ANY phenomenon that is unequivocally beyond scientific explanation would do. Really, any at all.

The notion that god ‘must’ be mysterious is a completely human idea. Why ‘should’ god be anything really?

There is nothing divinely inspired about human goodness, IMO it can be completely explained within the context of evolutionary psychology, which incidentally, has much to say about why atheism is a growing idea.

Key word being, to you. Nothing you have pointed out is grounds to believe that faith is rational. Your premises are murky at best and your conclusion does not logically follow from them

Just so. Human moral codes have evolutionary value***.That’s why it is basically the same in virtually all societies.

Ann interesting support for this position is that compassion has been observed among chimpanzees and their own kind.

***This is called’ ethical egoism, a philosophical position to which I subscribe.

))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))0))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

Chimpanzees, long considered reluctant to share, apparently can display selfless tendencies, revealing one more key way our closest living relatives are like humans, scientists find.

These findings could shed light on the evolution of altruism in humans, showing that selflessness is less of an anomaly among our relatives than before suggested, researchers added.

In recent years, research has revealed just how much chimpanzeeshave in common with us. They can hunt with spears, play with improvised dolls and mourn their dead.

Show us your evidence.

I guess you are talking about hell .

If it makes sense you could offer a cogent description, but you admit you cannot.

I am extremely dubious as this is an unevidenced assertion, it as statically likely that you have picked the wrong deity or the wrong version of your chosen deity, and will be punished for it.

What objective evidence can you demonstrate for any deity?

If the answer is none, then why should I care about your belief in it anymore than you care about beliefs in all the other deities humans have invented?

Well actually, that’s very much arguable.

As a far as I can tell, the notion of an eternal hell is a christian invention, cobbled together over centuries. It doesn’t exist in Judaism.

Below a clip from my favourite theist, Bishop John Shelby Spong:

You seem to love to use the hell threat  .Well religion has it’s threats to control people I know many things about religion threats .It doesn’t surprise me at all . I know of a extreme religion that has more armageddon threats than your regular hell fire religion .Hell is like a propaganda for religion in order not to lose it’s members and it is propaganda to gain more members by it’s fear .Here is the reason why I call God ‘‘Sky dictator’’

My response maybe something along the lines of, “Fuck off, where were you when I prayed to you?”

“And if you mean me harm if I don’t let you in, why do you claim to love me?”

An all powerful, all knowing, Universe creating God thing, needs to create beings that will worship him? Really? Seriously folks, is there a more idiotic postulate in the universe? And if you don’t worship him, you will suffer for all eternity? Come on… someone is pulling my leg.

Indeed. Surely they can’t ALL be Mormons!

(((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((90))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

According to the Plan of Salvation, under the direction of God the Father, Jehovah created the earth as a place where humanity would be tested. After the resurrection, all men and women—except the spirits that followed Lucifer and the sons of perdition—would be assigned one of three degrees of glory. Within the highest degree, the celestial kingdom, there are three further divisions, and those in the highest of these celestial divisions would become gods and goddesses through a process called “exaltation” or “eternal progression”

Mormon cosmology - Wikipedia.

The utter and complete bullshit some people fill their minds with!! Isn’t it amazing?

Yep.

But to be fair, neither Mormon nor Scientologist beliefs are no loopier than say christianity or Hindu Belief—

Apart from Church Of England/Episcopalian, Mormonism seems to be the most petit bourgeois newish religion. I think lot of 'em are stuck. They have far too much to lose financially or in community status to admit to themselves that Joseph Smith was just a criminal and conman. That his teachings are wankery of the first water.

Tested for what? The ability to suck up, grovel, and be completely obedient?

Because that is what gets you (in the eyes of the Abrahamic religions) into heaven.

Read on McDuff---------IF one is a really good little Mormon, one gets one’s very own planet, with worshippers. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

—Mormons lost me forever when they told me I would get to meet all of my dead relatives. I can think of few things more stultifying.

Thought for the day “Heaven for the climate. Hell for the company” (Mark Twain)

But the mormon afterlife has different levels of heaven. If you attain the highest level, what are your relatives that don’t attain that same state? Zombies?

You’re not supposed to ask logical questions, 'sakes. :innocent:
