I know it’s not a meme, but for absolute clarity given we have apologists denying such facts, here’s the full quote:

28 If a man comes upon a young woman, a virgin who is not betrothed, seizes her and lies with her, and they are discovered, 29 the man who lay with her shall give the young woman’s father fifty silver shekels and she will be his wife, because he has violated her. He may not divorce her as long as he lives.

So the father gets a cash bribe for damage to his “property” and the victim has to marry her rapist, and chillingly may never divorce. Classy…more chillingly we are not told what happens if the rape remains undiscovered, would any woman in her right mind tell her family in those circumstances?

(my emphasis)

The devil is in the details. There is another interpretation here. Note that it says “he may not divorce her”. It doesn’t say that she cannot divorce him. Now, to my knowledge, divorce in the bible is by and large about husbands divorcing their wives, not the other way around. I did however find a couple of mentions about wives divorcing their husbands:

1 Corinthians 7:10-11:

10 To the married I give this charge (not I, but the Lord): the wife should not separate from her husband 11 (but if she does, she should remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband), and the husband should not divorce his wife.

Mark 10:12:

12 And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.”

The rest of the quotes I found are about husbands divorcing their wives, and that divorced women may not remarry, because that is adultery. Yeah, such fine christian values. :face_vomiting:
