It is the result of lowering public education standards while aggressively promoting adherence to the trifecta of American mythologies of rugged individualism, exceptionalism and the good old American Dream.
Jesus promotes American Exceptionalism as it infers America has been chosen and blessed by God.
Guns speak to the good old pioneer or minuteman rugged individualism.
Babies is somewhat ironic, as it invokes family values and a continual future…while completely ignoring the yoke it places on the populous in assuming the massive debt to raise them.
But, it does have a better ring to it than:

No you’re not missing something, it’s an obscene juxtaposition.
Other flavors of Christians will cherry pick entirely different things of course, entirely ignoring (or converting to symbolism) the places in the gospels where Jesus is irritable or violent (cursing of the fig tree, scourging of the temple).
This particularly nasty formulation is very Bible Belt / Southern US in character. It is not that … overt … in the midwest / northern states. In fact it would be regarded as a bit “hayseed” or rube-ish. I grew up in fundamentalism in northern Illinois, where we fancied ourselves a bit more [pseudo-]intellectual. And yet we had our own nasty side. Our preferred manual for raising your children for example was James Dobson’s Dare to Discipline, the basic thesis of which is, your children are depraved and wicked and it’s your job as a parent to break their spirit (Dobson’s exact words) lest they grow up to we willful and “rebellious”. Hence, corporal punishment is a mandate.
