Ethics…triage…medical decisions…life choices and COVID

Hi Grinseed, I hope you get through this tough time as quickly and unscathed as possible.

I can not fully support lifting restrictions completely, but rather based on the amount of hospital beds available. Some will get through this unaffected, some will suffer moderate symptoms, and sadly, some will die.

I can not, in good conscience, advocate for any program that may rob someone of a hospital bed when they need it. Especially for those who have dutifully followed the protocols.

Based on the stupidity of human behavior, I expect everyone to contract Covid. At the very onset there may have been a chance, but now with the politics and sheer stupidity of those unwilling to follow the simple practices of masks, distancing, and vaccination, Covid is the new flu.

I agree. This is one area of resources and staff that cannot cope with an influx of a population all exposed and still cope with “normal” population healthcare.

It’s getting there. But it’s not there yet and neither is much of the other countries.

A mix of hopefulness and restraint.

My area alone:

Hang in there. The school I work at just got shut down. An art school next to us had a case of Covid. One of the kids attending caught it and many of the kids that go to the school I work at also go there. We are shut down for a week. In the meantime, the small city I live in had 50 cases of Covid, 3 days ago. That jumped to 91 the day before yesterday. Yesterday it was at 210. As of 6:00 Pm today there were 18 more confirmed cases. The little town I am in is suddenly getting hit hard. The government is warning people not to meet their families for the New Year (Like that is going to happen.) The New Year Celebration in Korea is as big as Christmas in America. Stores are packed with gift items that children take to their parents…

(Everyone is a child and everyone returns to their hometown and to their parent’s home for the New Year holiday. Gifts are large boxes of perfectly grown fruits. 12 to 15 oranges might sell for as much as $55.00. Here is a page that has the sorts of items that are selling like …(insert your favorite descriptive term).

https://blog.mykoreatrip.com/gift-giving-during-seollal-new-year/

Streets are crowded and the gifts are flying off the shelves. Things are about to get really bad, ‘I suspect.’ “Happy” *cough cough… sniffle… * “New Year.”

S Korea has a pretty good vaccination rate.

From Shepards of Good Hope…

Fuck, it’s embarrassing :flushed:. There’s live feed. Also, RTNews stated 50,000 truckers (I checked their site and had about 3 fallacies in one sentence). My FB had lit up that “mainstream” is saying the “Russians did it” (they didn’t BUT they sure know how to influence stupid people) ‘cause every redneck Albertan has quoted to 50,000 truckers.

My apologies. There is a silent, intelligent majority in Alberta.

Oh, and a “blockade” near Coutts to stop vaccinated drivers from crossing. They want the shelves to be affected.

Not just Alberta
https://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2022/01/29/small-group-of-protesters-set-up-blockade-at-houlton-woodstock-border-crossing-in-belleville.html

The leader of the peanut gallery to the south weighs in on the Ottowa shit show.

ah geez. I’m sure I’ll hear about it tomorrow as my coworker waves around her cell phone full of misinformation and mislabled pictures. She will have done her “research”, which will amount to scrolling around the internet and believing every conspiracy theory there is. She’s the most vocal, but she’s not alone. I’m surrounded by people who are celebrating the truckers “fight for freedom”. Yeah, right, lets all cheer on their right to die from something preventable. Sighhhhhhhhhh. Breathe breathe breathe.

I understand that some of these “protesters” are acting in good faith, although poorly motivated. But along with them are the radical assholes, just there to stir up shit.

@Kellii Tell your co-worker what they did to the Terry Fox statue on Parliament hill. He is a genuine hero, he is presently a front-runner to be on our five dollar bill.

Ignorant. Stupid. Assholes.

Yesterday while the major of Amsterdam held a speach at the Auschwitzmonument a co-worker told me non vaccinated people are treated like Jews in WWII. It seems ethical consciousness is not strong in him.
I tried to explain that Jews could not get vaccinated and then not be Jew anymore, and that non vaccinated people did not get gassed to death as far as I know…
It did not convince him. End of conversation, I did not expect to hear something like that from somebody do close…

They are treated like smokers. Restrictions are in place for public health and safety. Job restrictions exist in all areas - some you need to be bi-lingual (learn or you don’t get the job).

IF they don’t want to be vaxed - then drive truck within the country is a viable option.

The point that got me? The comparison is so out of whack…

Like fuck,he’s an ignoranumus. I worked for a gardener, we called him Ziggy. He was from Poland and survived a death camp. Every day the guards would roam through the camp and pick out people to be led to the gas chambers. he faked insanity, unfortunately it lead to him becoming a bit nuts. Every prisoner had their teeth drilled. Not up through the crown, but sideways, leaving a neat hole that guaranteed that each tooth would rot out.

Through the weekend in Ottawa, a homeless shelter, Shepherds of Good Hope had some "protesters"invade their facilities and demand food. They took from the homeless and starving.

Our War Memorial was defaced. Imagine anyone doing that to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington?

Best quote from the Ottawa mayor. “I’m not taking my medical advice from the trucker’s association.”

Oh fuck that made me laugh. Looks like the news got ahold of the “feed” (re: homeless shelter) I had posted earlier. What led me to it initially was the FB passing how supported they were and handing out free food to patriots. So I checked the homeless kitchen twitter feed. :grimacing:

It’s like the blockades to stop regular truckers from crossing with goods. They want to force a shortage.

From the Facebook page of Shepherds of Good Hope

https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/news/2022/01/requirements-for-truckers-entering-canada-in-effect-as-of-january-15-2022.html

Thought I’d post the requirements. This has been worked on, discussed for quite some time prior to Jan this year (2022).

Those truckers will be forced to turn back to the U.S. until they are fully inoculated.
Ottawa announced in mid-November that all truck drivers crossing into Canada would need to be fully vaccinated by Jan. 15, regardless of nationality. Unvaccinated or partially vaccinated Canadian truckers would have been required to take a COVID-19 test and enter isolation.

Trade associations on both sides of the border had been pushing for a delay to the restriction, which they said would put additional strain on supply chains amid the latest COVID-19 surge and severe worker shortages.

USA trucker American Trucking Association chief economist Bob Costello estimates that just under half of the 28,000 U.S. drivers who regularly haul freight across the border will no longer be able to do so, posing a threat to the smooth supply of goods.

(My note: because of their low vaccine rate)

Likewise the USA :us: requires “ …Department of Homeland Security’s decision to require all foreign travelers entering the United States to be vaccinated starting on January 22, 2022 – including Canadian and other non-citizen truck drivers. ”

This does effect USA drivers. Mostly. Roughly 50% vaccine rate US and 90% vaccine rate Can.

EDITED to add: my ex was a truck driver. We owned trucks. Many of my FB acquaintances are drivers/families. I support Canadian interests. When the USA was placing restrictions and trade issues (threatening and taking Canadian jobs, industry and resources) I supported our country’s position and did not see the USA (same industry) open its arms to Canadians to come down there and protest their sovereignty (and decisions). There are channels and means for two countries to work out issues related to economics.

IMO this has turned into a shitshow from (mostly) US drivers and influences (international podcasts ) and the initial “meaning” (of health restrictions) is being lost in a narrative of a general “freedom” (and fuck Trudeau) with some far right wanting to over-throw the govt (have “them” step down).

The many drivers I know, may talk some shit but not to what I am seeing displayed in this venue (and not just from main stream). Also a large religious overtone.

Robert Lemay died of Covid last Friday.

In the mean time, my little town of So-ho, in Yeosu, Korea, is shutting down. The school I work at will be closed for the rest of the week. All teachers will be tested once weekly. Today there were 19 more confirmed cases of Covid. Yesterday there were 411 confirmed cases, so the total is now at 430. 48% of these cases were spread to victims by family members. The New Year’s Celebrations are in full swing. I’m expecting numbers in the thousands after the New Years Celebration.

Lol…

It’s been over a week and is now an “occupation”.

Portland? Reminds me of Portland’s beginnings.

Same shit will occur.

careful who who pick for your enemy, you become just like them

BTW…the religious tone (quote) “Out of respect for the Lord’s Day, for members of our military who have sacrificed and who continue to sacrifice so much for our freedom, for the men and women in blue who are doing such a superb job protecting us, and as a gesture of goodwill, members of our Convoy will desist from the blowing of Horns tomorrow, Sunday from 9 am to 1 pm Ottawa time,” the group announced in a statement on Saturday. Despite the promise, however, truck horns continued to blare incessantly Sunday morning.

No respect for the humans (and  not their Lord).

Quote from Occupy Portland
describes its purpose as building “a vehicle for collaboration towards a common vision, drawing strengths and wisdoms of conservatives, moderates, and progressives alike…to be a voice of moderation and conscience that puts people before politics” in the “age of increasing polarization.”[60]

Um… This must be Canada. In America, the men in blue have no obligation what so ever to protect the citizenry. There is 'NO" duty to protect anyone in this country. None. The police work for the corporation and they are revenue generators for the city. When you go to court (And we have an advisarial court system.) the police are on the side of the prosecutor. Our system is broken. Completely broken. I’m glad to hear yours is working.
