Weird music suggestions

I want you to send me down the rabbit hole of weird music you have found. Artists that make you rethink reality. I will share my list after a few suggestions.

Any of the last three records from AKHLYS, a black metal band who focus mainly on dreaming and nightmares. It’s some really cool stuff.

My fav bands still performing (all of them are kind of weird):

  1. Darkest of the Hillside Thickets - about 50% of their songs are Lovecraft based.
  2. OFF! - featuring Keith Morris (Black Flag/Circle Jerks).
  3. Forbidden Dimension - a garage band from Alberta, Canada.

Rabbit hole, OK. I have some. I’m assuming that you already know Frank Zappa, which is his own rabbit hole, but here is Hot Rats, one of my favourite Zappa albums. Captain Beefheart did the vocals on the second track on Hot Rats (Willie The Pimp). Other than that, Captain Beefheart had his own career. Random picks: Safe as Milk (playlist); Trout Mask Replica (full album).

Moving from that to The Residents, a very innovative avant-garde and performance art band that I have a soft spot for. The first Residents album I encountered was Meet The Residents, which I used to play over and over again, at insane volume. If that was too harsh on your ears, try instead Daemons Dance Alone (and here is a fantastic live recording).

One of the artists that collaborated with The Residents was Snakefinger. Here is Snakefinger performing his Jesus Was A Leprechaun. And here is Snakefinger in a weird and very low-budget music video of The Man In The Dark Sedan.

Also collaborating with The Residents at some point was Renaldo and The Loaf from England. Here’s a random sample: Hambu Hodo (nonsense lyrics). Although they did most of their works in the 1980s, they reunited to release a new recording in 2016. Here’s a sample: A Convival Ode.

As for jazz, I found Hungarian-American guitarist Gábor Szabó in one of my own rabbit holes. Here’s a couple of his albums: Dreams and 1969. By the way, Gábor Szabó was one of the big inspirations for Carlos Santana - watch Carlos Santana talking about Gábor Szabó.

Others can send you down black metal rabbit holes.

That’s enough for now. And I hope that music is not too weird or abrasive for you, that you might actually find the above artists and recordings enjoyable, and go down several of those rabbit holes.

I… wtf guys lol i meant like aesop rock or iglooghost not every bad that made music for adult swim lmao no this is actually a great start but the two artists I named are fascinating and might change your perspective on music. Ps its not assap rocky he sucks and is not worthy of that name. Father of peace is really cool too. Lets see the french blues rap band scarecrow is really cool along with yoshi di original also a french rapper. For rock or metal the band 22 is really interesting the song algorithm is a good starter for them. Ghost of course is cool. Sicktanick is a colorado lyrical artist who basically made a genre of music called occult rap… his lyrics can be triggering if you’d like to offend your Christian friends. Mf doom is the king of underground rap. Sa-roc is the best female rapper on the planet. I listen to alot of boombap lyrical rap but all these artists are worth the listen. Primus has to be on this list along with puscifer. Who doesnt love Maynard

Maynard’s creativity is unmatched! Sicktanick’s occult rap sounds intriguing. I’m curious how his style fits in with the others. Thanks for sharing these recommendations!

If you’re referring to Maynard James Keenan, he’s the vocalist from TOOL, not PRIMUS. The vocalist from PRIMUS is Les Claypool.

I’ll share a few of my favourites and odd one that made me laugh…

Favourites:

Korn - Korn
Slipknot - Slipknot & Iowa albums
System of a Down - Toxicity
HIM - Razorblade Romance
Pantera - Vulger display of power

An odd one for a laugh:

Alestorm - Black sails of Europe (song - Keelhauled) pirate metal, makes me chuckle

I know i was just listing the bands is all although they have done a project together.

Want something that’s REALLY out there? How about Mongolian Folk Metal, in the form of The HU:

On the other hand, if you prefer your unusual music to be gothic, with utterly incandescent female vocals, I give you Aurora Blaze:
