Something happened in the U.S. capitol that wasn’t horrible and infantile and reactionary and tinged with racism.

That is indeed good news. Unfortunately, the new statue of Johns stands right next to the statue of the traitor Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederacy. The Davis statue needs to be removed ASAP!

I’m attempting to bake a traditional Black Forest cake today (and tomorrow) for the first time!

My wife & I had dinner tonight with another couple. Interesting people and conversation. Things almost seemed “normal”. It’s been a very rough week for all of us, so was a good way to end it on a relatively high note. And to be reminded that there are still sane people!

Of course as with 90% of our friends they are theists (conservative Jewish in this case) so the trick is to avoid Certain Topics – in their case, the notion that the secular Israeli state can do no wrong up to and including genocide – but they are quite sane in all other compartments. This is my experience with most religious people, the crazy is in one or two boxes that you must never open but otherwise you can find plenty of common ground / humanity / whatever.

I baked me very first attempt at a Red Velvet Cheesecake with homemade Raspberry Preserves Icing cake day before yesterday (2026-0626). Could not believe it came out perfect. Almost fainted at first taste. 76yo and I still got the touch.

Flabbergasting.

P.S. - Me mom ate more of the cake than I did. She can still be sneaky…

It’s the little things you have to hold on to.

My wife is terribly worried about our son (as am I) but she’s anxious by nature anyway and I’m trying to get her to focus on last week’s little victories rather than its many Concerning Aspects. He noticed she was emptying the dishwasher, dropped his reading and pitched in with cleaning up the kitchen. That’s like a miracle of initiative for him. It was followed up by a no-stress, genuine mother/son “table talk”. Something is shifting in his awareness.

Over against that I took him to a class and attempts to discuss future possibilities and plans around that were met with total shutdown and if you extrapolate from that to him being homeless on the streets without a friend in the world eventually, it’s not outside the realm of possibility at all. But we don’t know the outcomes and we do know that they are seldom nothing but bad. All that’s actionable is what we can do for him today, and making sure we’re doing all that we can.

So that’s our version of your cheesecake, and your mother’s enjoyment of it. Life is now, and, to borrow one of the few Biblical aphorisms I actually endorse, “sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof”.
