US catholic bishops plan to punish unwanted political opinions by denying communion

The last time I looked, the priests were not checking IDs or mandating a background check prior to passing out communion wafers. Whether the Pope bans the practice or not, no priest is going to ask for evidence of political leanings prior to passing out a bit of magical cracker.

This threat has no teeth at all.

Although some of them would love to I am sure.

Fact is the threat is directed at the members of Congress and the Senate and assorted Judges all of whom have a high profile some nationally and some on a local basis.

The local Catholic Church surely knows them by sight. That’s where the Bishops hope to hit hardest.

That is taking political interference that mile too far in my book. But I doubt anything will be done except the Catholic Church will lose yet more members over the next year.

Exactly. Some of the Supreme Court Justices are Catholics. So if they follow the law and render a judgement that is counter to the dogma of the catholic church, then what?

Wow, that alone is grounds to disqualify anyone from being nominated to serve as a Justice in the Supreme Court of the US.

Additionally, any catholics presently serving as Justices should resign or recluse themselves from any case that is entangled with the dogma of the catholic church.

I would love to be a lawyer arguing in favor of sustaining the Roe versus Wade decision that will inevitably surface.

Members of this court, I submit that give Chief Justice John Roberts, Justice Samuel Alito, Justice Sonia Sotomayor, Justice Clarence Thomas, and Justice Brett Kavanaugh recluse themselves from this case because their faith as catholics has compromised their ability to render a a fair and legal judgement because the roman catholic church is threatening to withhold communion if they do not follow catholic dogma.

Don’t forget Justice Amy Coney Barrett :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Yeah, don’t forget Amy Coney Barrett. She’s said and published enough on record to make a good argument for her having to recuse herself on abortion. She’s even written the opinion that judges should recuse themselves where a case conflicts with their religion, though she was talking about soothing the conscious of the judge where they would be required by law to do something like impose the death penalty when it was against their religious beliefs, and not about a case where a judge got to willfully impose their religious beliefs on others.

A cringy quote from a speech she gave to a graduating class of lawyers:" I hope
that you, as graduates of Notre Dame, will fulfill the promise
of being a different kind of lawyer. And that is this: that you
will always keep in mind that your legal career is but a means to
an end, and as Father Jenkins told you this morning, that end
is building the kingdom of God."

She can’t, with any degree of credibility, argue that her religious beliefs don’t affect her decisions.
