This is one thing I feel conspiracy theorists got correct that the amount of sexual abuse in the entertainment industry is deep and ran by people who fallow odd ideologies and are just sick in the head. What is it really that drives people to these sort of acts? If it’s money than why promote the idea of getting rich and famous? I know that sexual abuse exists elsewhere as well but it is showing itself in places of power the most. So my question is what do we do as a society? If this level of crimes are committed by people in power and influence should we even have people who pursue power and influence or do we remove this idea entirely or an awful thought is we accept sexual abuse as a byproduct of this lifestyle which makes my stomach churn.
I dohbt that just because sexual abuse is shown a lot in places of power means its a bigger issue there.
Its probably a bigger issue in places of poverty and over crowding and less likely to be on mainstream world wide news when it does happen.
However the kind of abuse i think youre talking about happens quite often in show bussiness because people are more openly hired based on how well liked and good looking they are.
I think the problem with trying to police something like this is tough, and tbh it happens on every level of life.
Ive worked in plenty of warehouses were women got promoted after sleeping with a manager, and witnessed plenty of nepotism.
Rape is generally understood as less a sexual act than a dominance move. Non-rapists assume that all rapists are just possessed of some kind of unbridled libido but that doesn’t explain raping sexually immature children, animals, etc. Rather it is the ultimate act of control and dominance.
That is why the more there’s an economic or age difference between two people, even a consensual relationship begins to be a red flag because of the inherent power imbalance, which then extends more influence or even control to the older of the two persons (usually the man), even with initially the best of intentions. In an intimate relationship IMO it’s better if both persons can “hold their own”. That doesn’t automatically make, say, a May/December romance evil – there are always counterexamples. But they tend to be exceptions that prove the point.
As to why these things seem to happen more among the wealthy and famous, it’s a combination of confirmation bias (they are in the news, we are not) and having more money than sense (or accountability) and being part of the two-tier justice system that works differently for the wealthy.
I’ve seen a lot of assertions about supposed rampant sexual debuachery (including the criminal sort) from the usual reich whinge mouths on sticks (the Pizzagate bilge being an example), but precious little in the way of evidence.
On the other hand, I’ve also seen numerous reports of various “pastors” and reich whinge political mouthpieces being arrested and/or convicted of the very same child sex offences they accuse others of. The “immigrants and drag queens are rapists” trope that many of them peddle, once again provides an example of a reich whinge accusation transforming into a confession in short order.
I’ve a nice little list of relevant specimens and their offences, and this year alone, the list, which by my own admission is incomplete, is already climbing toward 50 names. “Youth pastor arrested for playing ‘Hide The Sausage’ with 12 year old girls” is happening so often now, it’s becoming a cliché.
Though, of course, this doesn’t surprise anyone surveying the relevant parts of conservative fundagelical culture, which brought us such obscenities as “purity balls” for 8 year old girls, and which also has no problems with child beauty pageants even after the JonBenet Ramsey case.
Anyone thinking that the Catholic Church is the only organisation with issues here, is going to be woefully and wonderfully surprised, once the skeletons start falling out of, say, the Southern Baptist closet. Though I suspect they’ll try and deflect by pointing the finger at the Mormons first, whose own weirdness in the field of sexual ethics is now well documented to a comedy extent.
A Google search on “Republican politician/pastor arrested for child sex offences” throws up dozens of names in short order. Celebrities? Mostly tumbleweed as far as I’m concerned. That’s because those in the celebrity orbit, know that their lives are being monitored to a microscopic extent, and that the likes of the National Inquirer will run with stories involving even a hint of criminal sexual activity, the way Usain Bolt runs with a baton in the 4×100 metre relay. They also know that the sort of protection they enjoyed up to around the early 1950s no longer exists, and most of them don’t possess the same level of arrogance as reich whinge pols or televangelists.
Very simply, the idea that Hollywood is the home of the nearest thing the USA ever had to royalty, died some time ago. Instead, the new Untouchables are in the orbit around the Orange Scrotum, and their chosen method of escaping scrutiny, consists of overwhelming the rest of us with a veritable tsunami of bare faced lies. These are people whose overweening arrogance, galactic entitlement and comically inflated self-aggrandisement, are all off the scale of every meter thereof we’ve constructed thus far.
If you want to see a real cesspit of sleaze and criminality, you dig into two strata - MAGA politics or fundamentalist religion. When the relevant history is written, it will nauseate the readers thereof almost as much as the accounts of Dachau and Auschwitz.
