Pope Leo has seen the rot that is spreading in his native USA as a result of corruption, and does not want that rot affecting the Catholic Church. He knows the faithful are sick and tired of scandals and misdeeds, and he’s decided that to stop that rot, the nuclear option is required. His finger is now hovering over the button.

I think Leo sees it as the same thing the US should have done with political extremists – they are invariably hateful and bigoted and should be shunned to the max or they will get a toehold in society and bring everything down as they try to return to some imagined “good old days” that never existed in the first place.
This is, I think, just one reason why an American Pope was a great idea – he gets it.
I think this may also be an oblique way to start rooting out the pedos. These people tend to be corrupt on multiple levels, including that one.
Even a Pope has political capital to manage and he can’t just snap his fingers and have everything he wants at once, and then have it stick after he’s gone. He’s probably going about this intelligently.
