Fringe nut job, I doubt this one has mainstream support, but I’ve been wrong before of course.
This is one of those situations where The Satanic Temple could step in and help clear this up. Surely MP Ali won’t want Imams arrested because they blasphemed Atheism (capital A intentional) from the pulpit. (not that you could blaspheme atheism because it’s not a religion, but TST could make a really strong case in court!)

I hope so. However, looking at what’s happened recently, I see a pattern of religious zealotry pushing into governments in a number of countries.
Perhaps it’s a response by some to the worldwide decline of religion, the increasing empowerment of women, a lust for wealth/power, etc. Either way, it’s concerning.
Edited to ask: Why didn’t Starmer tell him to go pound sand?

Yeah, I wondered if the MP was just trying to look like he was trying to serve his constituency knowing that there wasn’t any chance that would happen.
Exactly the case, Birmingham likely has the highest concentration of people of the Muslim faith in the whole UK, he’s always in the headlines for saying controversial things. I seriously doubt they’d get a bill through the commons for blasphemy laws. Even if he did heavy-handedly try to pretend it was to fight Islamophobia.
Of curse the usual culprits on the extreme right will make hay from this one.
