10/10 for pointing that out. The many different ways (ref. 1, 2, 3) the word can be defined makes it a prime candidate for misunderstanding, if not used in a precise manner.
This practice is fairly common. For example, String Theory really should be called String Hypothesis or String Conjecture, because it’s virtually untestable.
Yes and no, depending on your particular point of view. As a physics framework, I support calling it an hypothesis or a conjecture rather than a theory, due to its untestability. But as seen from a mathematics point of view, you can very well call it a theory. But in any case, string theory is a theoretical framework where point-like objects are replaced by one-dimensional string objects. So as a framework describing physical reality, one would be hard pressed to call it a theory. As a framework for describing a possible reality: maybe. If you only focus on the mathematics, where the physics is more or less uninteresting: Yes, probably.
