I hate christmas

Ummmmm… Hmmmm…… So, I don’t mean to be splitting hairs here, but, uh, wouldn’t that depend on which hemisphere the people were in? Meaning not everybody on the planet would be celebrating on Dec. 25th every year. Basically, one half would be ending winter (and celebrating), while the other half would be going, “Aw, fuck! Winter is about to start!” And then there is the matter of how close or far away from the equator the people are. Some areas closer to the equator hardly notice any seasonal changes. While areas furtherest from the equator can experience EXTREME seasonal changes. Or am I totally wrong on all that?

Fuckin’ hell! God-damned hair splitters always pointing out the obvious. Its getting rather oppressive when a person can’t just make blanket statements anymore. Bastards…I wish it was like it used to be when you could just say anything and people would nod in agreement like one of those little dogs in the back window of a lowered '59 Impala…

I hope you are smarter than the shit you write indicates. A moron with an Internet connection can prove you wrong in 30 seconds.

Antiquarian James Napier, originally from Partick in Glasgow, gave a fantastical account of how the Celtic priests, or druids, marked this time of year in Folklore of Superstitions, Beliefs in the West of Scotland (1879).

He wrote of priests gathering and walking in solemn procession to the forest to search for mistletoe growing on oak trees, with the plant holding near miraculous properties of curing illness, ensuring fertility and protecting against the darkness of witchcraft.

Mr Napier wrote: “When found, the priests ascended the tree and cut down the divine plant with a golden knife, which was secured below upon a line cloth of spotless white. Two white bulls were then conducted to the spot for the occasion and there sacrificed to the sun god.

You are misstating what I am saying. I am NOT denying for one minute that religious mumbo-jumbo was involved in the past winter solstice celebrations. i have acknowledged that.

Religion’s modus operandi is to invade every aspect of our lives and make it about their god somehow. Citizens in many countries, including the USA, incorporate God into their very constitution and politics. Little wonder that thousands of years ago when our ancient ancestors decoded the stars and their motions that their “god dejour” was placed front and center in it. But make no mistake: the “reason for the season”—the true meaning for the winter solstice celebration was the winter solstice!

Why else would EVERY ancient sun god in the northern hemisphere have its birthday “miraculously” at this one particular time? Don’t be blinded by all of the religious sparkle that appeared during this single universally celebrated date. That is not the CAUSE of a religious celebration; it is the predictable EFFECT. Anything that occurs in nature has a god named after it. Superstition is the bedrock of religion. Nothing as major as the end of winter and the promise of replenishment could escape the clutches of religion! Surely you understand this. So please do not believe that just because there was a huge religious fuss made over the winter solstice, that belief in a god was the ORIGIN of that celebration. Religion is a parasite that clings to its host and “consumes” it.

Very smart ancient humans studied the motions of stars METICULOUSLY. They learned when—to the minute—each of the four seasons would arrive. The zodiac existed long before recorded history. It clearly shows both solstices and both equinoxes (the 4 seasons) and which stars are present (the time): That knowledge was astonishing and very powerful. It allowed humans to predict the time when they should travel, when they should plant, when they should harvest and when they should celebrate winter’s official end. ONLY after that information was known could anyone celebrate winter’s end. So it was only a question of time before “sun gods” could emerge and be assigned winter solstice birthdays coinciding with the sun’s actual astronomical “rebirth” in the sky.

Look, this is not a question of “the chicken or the egg”.
The knowledge and the inevitable celebration of the winter solstice not only LOGICALLY came first, it FACTUALLY came first. The origin of the oldest religion (Hinduism) dates back to 2,300 BC, But the the zodiac dates back to 3,200 BC. So that leaves a good 8 centuries for humans to celebrate winter’s end before a magic genie could be invented and assigned a birthday on or near winter’s end.

Baby jesus?

Well, with all due respect (just saying that to be polite), I dare say I’m not the one being blinded here. You, on the other hand, having all your anger and hate openly displayed for any and all to see these past few weeks, have made your blind spots glaringly noticeable. Whether you realize it or not, you act as though all our ancient ancestors developed their various religions for the sole purpose of pissing YOU off and making YOUR life miserable. Newsflash, Sport: It is YOU who is making your life miserable. Granted, you do not see that. You CANNOT see that. Your bitterness and your rage will not allow you to see that. Therefore, you continue with your anti-religious rants and crusades in the exact same manner as the theists who become so enraged and lash out with a vengeance against anybody who would dare challenge the existence of their all-powerful god(s). But, again, you do not see that. Moreover, you come here (and I imagine other places) in an effort to “recruit” other atheists to “join your valiant cause” of spreading your anger and hate upon that which you accuse of doing the exact same thing. Alas, you also fail to see that. In a nutshell, you have basically become what you so deeply despise, and you are completely blind to it. Even when this has been pointed out to you by others, you have deflected it and/or attempted to “rationalize” it no differently than the theists who try to “rationalize” their god(s). Anyway, good luck with your recruiting efforts.

Oh now you know the “true meaning.” No true celebrater of the solstice would sacrafice animalsm, humans, small rodents, sheep, or even their crops. Those assholes who did all that shit aren’t the real solstice worshipers. What is it those horses are eating over there? Is that a hat I see in the pile of straw.

Andy, Grow The Fuck Up, the solstice has pagan origins and pagans sacrificed animals and humans during the solstice rituals. You have been given at least 5 different articles between the last time you tried this shit and now. Go Fucking Read One Of Them! (Capitalization Intended.)

These will at some point be “presents”. The flowers are part of potato plants and will likely go into soup. The peaches and mulberries (if my daughter doesn’t eat them first) will likely be made into preserves.

It is fun to watch them grow all season and find new life in good food.

I suspect our friend will not allow facts and history to get in the way of his opinion. Zero difference between him and a christian.

Not clear what you are saying. Sorry.

Sigh…During the time of ancient societies, like Egypt and Rome, the southern “world” wasn’t on the map—literally. For all intents and purposes, the southern hemisphere didn’t “exist”. I am fully aware of your Aussie “Christmas” in summer…—>

Fair enough, I shall clarify.

You are demanding, just like a christian.

You are intolerant of others, just like a christian.

You believe your worldview is the only legitimate one, just like a christian.

You claim ownership of a day, just like a christian.

You do not have all of your facts and history correct, just like a christian.

Edit: had to add another christian trait to the list.

You do not accept any responsibility and avoid accountability, just like a christian.

The North American Indigenous peoples have a history from their first migration, 26,000 to 19,000 years ago.

This is what YOU stated, not some Greek or Roman historian.

I shall have to amend my list, now you do not accept any responsibility and avoid accountability. Just like a christian.

Wow. I had you all wrong. I thought you were a kindred spirited atheist who embraced facts and logic. I’m so disappointed to find that you are just like Cognostic; you attack the person—not the argument. Shame on you, Tin-Man. Your entire reply to my cogent argument is just a rant consisting of a pathetic ad hominem fallacy. I’m flabbergasted.

Yes, religion makes me angry. It is an insult to science, rationality, morality, humanism and logic. Its entire history is a testament to its intolerance and barbarity. I make no apologies for my outright condemnation of this blight upon humankind. Yet you attack me for this?

Whew. Good riddance to you.

If you are being attacked, it is for your attitude and demands, not the actual fact that most of us agree that religion is a cancer to mankind.
