That’s the best description of Justice I have heard in a long time. It truly is an imaginative concept.
It’s also been verified that a man can lose half his brain and still function normally.
When I say “we don’t know what consciousness is” I don’t mean what it “does”. I mean how it works. What gives rise to it. We don’t understand that mechanism.
NO!
A man can lose half his bran and “FUNCTION” as if he were normal. We can place him on an MRI and see the abnormalities in his brain and how they have compensated for what has been damaged. In addition, we can not call the person with half a brain ‘functioning normally’ because we have no way of measuring or observing what the same person would be like with a fully restored brain. You have NOTHING to measure or examine. You simply see a person functioning but you have no possible way of gauging what would be ‘normal’ for a person with a damaged brain. NONE.
FACT: Brain hemispheres can have different opinions on the existence of God. That in no way implies that each hemisphere can not function. Without BOTH fully functioning; however, you can not assert the person ‘FUNCTIONS NORMALLY.’ Only that they function (their behaviors and existence seem normal to us.)
YOU ARE JUST WRONG AGAIN!
What has fully understanding it got to do with the fact it is only ever seen from a live functioning brain, and disappears when that brain dies?
Though not in every case, and we also know that functions derived from particular areas of the brain are impaired when those areas are damaged significantly. The brain has impressive healing powers some times yes, but when it dies, the consciousness that was associated with it ends, your assertion doesn’t address that fact. If you want me to believe consciousness isn’t a function of the brain, you’ll have to provide something tangible in the way of objective evidence, and not just appeals to mystery, or argumentum ad ignorantiam fallacies.
It would need to overcome the overwhelming objective evidence that indicates consciousness is a function of the brain as well, so far speculation and appeals to mystery is all that is on offer, as is always the case in my experience, and sometimes using anecdotal testimony and bald assumptions.
@rat_spit Are you placing “consciousness” in the same category as “soul”? A formless quality that can not be measured or explored without resorting to philosophy and woo woo?
Because consciousness is being explored and measured. Yes, we are just beginning on this path of exploration and there is a lot more to learn.
Consciousness is not unknown, it it not supernatural or outside of what science can explore.
Nor is there a single example of it existing without a functioning human brain.
It’s not possible to express an opinion here without being harped on to provide scientific evidence for it.
It’s a personal opinion. I don’t care if you believe me. I’m not even sure I believe my self. And I don’t have any intention of convincing you that it’s the case.
I’m just spit balling here Sheldon. The personal evidence for consciousness far outweighs the scientific evidence for consciousness. Have you ever considered that? That your personal experience of consciousness is far more authentic than any current scientific explanation?
I remember why we’re not allowed to play now.
No. No. And no. I’m rescinding the opinion. I can see where this is going. Another year long ban for trolling. I’d rather not. Thank you for the discussion.
@rat_spit Please do not think you are under any dark cloud and could be banned. Right now that is not even close to being on the table.
The personal evidence for the sun moving around the earth far outwieghs the scientific evidence too. How fucking stupid do you want to be? The demonic modle of disease takes less work to understand than microbiology and the disease modle. Let’s all be fucking stupid.
There’s nothing more personal than ones subjective awareness of reality. It has nothing to do with empirical observation.
And that my friend comes from electrical impulses and chemical reactions IN YOUR BRAIN. When your brain ceases to function…so does your subjective awareness of anything. Sheesh. C’mon Ratty.
There is no ‘Personal Subjective Awareness of ‘REALITY.’’ Personal and subjective are eliminated by the fact that you grew up in a culture. We call ‘personal subjective’ BATSHIT FUCKING CRAZY, and it gets you locked away in a nice white room where you can do no harm. You don’t get to have ‘personal experiences’ of REALITY. Reality is that which can be independently varified. If it can not be verified, it is a fucking DELUSION!
Personal evidence is like toilet paper for others to wipe their ass with. It’s shit. It’s the go to bullshit argument theists use for their religious babble.
Perhaps consciousness goes to the same place as wetness when a puddle dries and is no longer
LOL… nice try. We know exactly where wetness goes. However; you would be onto something if you had cited, “Where wetness goes at the quantum level.” Hydrogen atoms are not wet. Oxygen atoms are not wet. But put them together and you get water. Where does the wetness go when you separate atoms once again?
But we really should be dealing with the real world. Imagine walking into a room full of tail wagging, tongue licking, little hyper pugs. Can you feel the joy? Now where does the joy go when you take all the pugs out of the room?
Well. I thought of something along the way that ties in with this.
What is a male orgasm?
“Oh,” replies the neurophysiologist. “That’s quite simple. Mechanical stimulation of sensory cells in the penis glans send messages to the oratory processing centre of the limbic system.”
(I’m making this shit up for dramatic effect).
“Dopamenergic neural pathways in the brain signal a cascade of muscle contractions connected to the sphincter.”
Etcetera, etcetera.
“And milk comes out your dingus. That’s what a male orgasm is!”
Or … teenager wanks off for the first time while his parents are on vacation.
“OHHHHHHH!!! THAT’S WHAT AN ORGASM IS!!!” he says.
Take home point. Consciousness is the same. Talk to me for hours about this electron and that electron, and this sympathetic nervous system and that. But all I have to do to really know is wake up in the morning and smell the coffee!
