Does God exist?

I believe there may have been God but I believe It probably was killed it It’s experiment The Big Bang.

Hi…Well, It’s an interesting thought. There’s no mental gymnastics to explain why a god doesn’t intervene and no convoluted mythology. As with any claim of a god, I’d like some proof. Maybe we’ll never know how the universe started, but it seems we’re getting closer with no supernatural being needed.

Where did this God come from?

What specifically did you want to debate?

This is not a new idea.

Isaac Asimov wrote a very famous short story called “The Last Question” which explores this very idea in a rational way.

This story was published in 1956, and has held up very well and is worth reading.

Also, this story addresses where this God comes from.

What point do you think that story makes? I’m not sure I “got it”.

The story begins by humans creating a computer which evolves over time into something akin to God, and then sacrifices itself to undo the entropy of the Universe to create another Big Bang.

My point is that Jerronimo’s idea about God dying in the process of creating the Universe was explored in 1956.

I’ll have to re-read it. Thanks.

Meh. Probably wildly interesting at the time it was published.

Reminds me of Arthur C. Clarke’s “The Nine Billion Names of God”, where man’s purpose is to find all of God’s names and they use a computer to help things along.

Grandiose ending. Impressed when I read the first time, in high school.

I believe it’s Buddhist in the story that are assiduously trying to speed up the end of the world. I thought only christians thought that was a goal worth pursuing, so that’s disappointing.

Thanks for the memory jog, I remember reading a few decades ago.

And why do you believe that ?

You need to show who you are responding to, if you highlight text from any post a quote icon will appear, when you click on it, it opens a post with the quote in it, and linked to the original post. You can also just click on the reply icon at the bottom of any post, and your reply will link to it, or you can simply type @, and then look for the name of the poster you’re replying to.

@Rich, welcome!

FYI, it’s difficult to know to whom this question was posed. To make things more clear in the future, you can use the @ or quote functions.

For @, just type that symbol and a drop-down will appear with user names. Click on the one you want and that poster will know you’re ‘speaking’ to them.

For the quote function, highlight the text you want and choose ‘Quote’ from the pop up. A reply box will open up automatically with that quote in it. You can then post your reply underneath that.

Jinx!

(Is this even done over there?)
