I think that in this context it is important to also emphasize that this is also about hegemony, and getting to control your out-group. Within the in-group of, say, the followers of Kvitekrist, they feel a strong urge to impose their superstition on the out-group. Thus, when members of the out-group claim that they are in fact good and moral people, the superstitionists do not effectively control their thoughts and behaviour. And they cannot tolerate this. With expansionistic religious beliefs like christianity and islam comes the demand to control not only the behaviour but also the thoughts of other people. Therefore, they have to attack in order to impose their views on others. Historically, this has been done with the use of threats, extortion, force, and liberal use of weapons of war.
