Here’s another nail in the JW coffin.
As a result of the Royal Commission into Child Sexual Abuse in Australia, the Government set up a National Redress Scheme for victims of institutional child sexual abuse. Those institutions named in the commission, or named in subsequent and verified complaints were obligated to sign up and participate in forms of repatriation.
Nearly four hundred organisations complied. Five did not. A sixth did but only after being publically named along with the other five, which included the Jehovahs Witnesses Church.
The five now face the prospect of losing all future government funding and charity status, meaning they will have to pay tax on contributions.
The JWs maintains they have already responded to the needs of those abused in their care. And they dared to complain that there were only less than 10 applications for redress made against the JWs, despite the 1,800 cases raised against them in the commission. Fuck the 10 then? WWJD?
Social Services Minister Anne Ruston insisted it was not up to Jehovah’s Witnesses or other organisations to decide whether their models suited the government scheme or not.
