Why does religion exist?

Then I would suggest you not make statements that indicate knowledge of something when it is not, in fact, known, only inferred.

Edited to add: the homo naledi hand in which the tool was found was that of a child. Although this could hint at rudimentary thoughts of an afterlife, it could easily also just be a loving act by a parent for a deceased child who admired a tool.

Additionally, it is a well known practice now, and in the past, to honor someone with gifts of items regarded as important or relevant. This was, and is, extended to the dead as well, as a show of respect and honor. Not all who have adorned their dead with beautiful or useful items did so with the notion of an afterlife, although there are examples of such.
It is an affirmation of our recognition of our mutual “worth” to bestow honor upon those who die, implying that there is value in each of our lives and that our mutual well-being is of a significant concern…

You seem really gung-ho but in your efforts to demonstrate what a great atheist you are, you are actually making all sorts of very juvenile mistakes. You might want to slow your roll for just a bit and get a feel for the forum. It seems like you have done some reading and are not totally in the dark. You are still making a lot of unfounded claims and assertions that are unrelated to atheism. Then you attempt to tie these claims into an atheist belief system. There is no atheist belief system. Slow down and be more careful with your assertions.

For nearly all intents and purposes, fear of death.

Is that your sole reason for theistic belief? It just seems like an oversimplification to me, though it seems like fear of death is likely to be a contributing factor.
