We use faith everyday

The believer uses faith in the sense of “belief in that not seen” .That is the core of all religious belief. Not reason ,not facts. I say ‘all’ because I have never seen one based on empirical evidence. (but would love to)

In fact, Jesus himself is reported as admonishing his disciples to do exactly that in the doubting Thomas incident:

John 20:29 " Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed." (KJV)

This bit for protestants. Martin Luther, father of the protestant reformation had this to say about reason:

Reason is a whore, the greatest enemy that faith has; it never comes to the aid of spiritual things, but more frequently than not struggles against the divine Word, treating with contempt all that emanates from God.” (Martin Luther)

The believers we get here tend to be impervious to reason and to facts. They are also almost always anti science and anti intellectual*** They all have seemed to be suffering from industrial strength cognitive dissonance

From Alice in Wonderland:

“When I use a word,” Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, “it means just what I choose it to mean—neither more nor less.” “The question is,” said Alice, “whether you can make words mean so many different things.” “The question is,” said Humpty Dumpty, “which is to be master—that’s all.”
((((((((((((((((((((((()))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

Alice laughed. “There’s no use trying,” she said: “one can’t believe impossible things.”

“I daresay you haven’t had much practice,” said the Queen. “When I was your age, I always did it for half-an-hour a day. Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.

(((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((90))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

*** here I use the term ‘intellectual’ in it’s broadest sense. Something like this:

“An intellectual (from the adjective meaning “involving thought and reason“) is a person who tries to use his or her intelligence and analytical thinking, either in their profession or for the benefit of personal pursuits.”

It does not strictly infer 'more intelligent than the aptly named ‘flock’ . It only means people who regularly engage in abstract thinking. Something few believers seem to do on a regular basis. Probably why most of them suck at it.

There is an invisible creator. She lives in a place you can’t see, and is so powerful she feels no need to communicate with to us. She has made us all aware of the truth - we just need to realise what that truth is. I think it may have something to do with closing your eyes and making a wish in just right way. It’s not her fault that we are not doing it right (no one ever has done - except her daughter who turned wine into water and did a heap of other awesome stuff.). Your problem is that you are trying to use reason and logic and have given into feeling good. What you need to do is feel really, really bad, stop masturbating and pretend the girls have clothes on when you are watching porn. Then you will know the truth and that truth will make you a complete dumbarse and you will be happy everafter.

FWIW, the word faith has a primary and secondary dictionary definition. Just as the word theory has a different meaning in a scientific context.

The secondary definition of faith, is the one used in a religious context.

Faith
noun

  1. Complete trust or confidence in someone or something.

  2. Strong belief in the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual conviction rather than proof.

That entirely negates the thread author’s false equivalence here, where he tries to equate confidence in the objectively evidenced findings of science, with unevidenced faith based belief in the archaic superstition of religion.

What’s hilarious is the number of theists who come here telling us they don’t need faith, as they have evidence, which of course they either cannot demonstrate, or it turns out to be unevidenced anecdote. Then just as often we get theists turning up like this one, trying to champion religious faith, by dishonestly equating the two very different definitions in the dictionary.

A simple word search destroys this lie…

That’s amazing. When she walked by the banana tree this morning, she told me you were going to say some really stupid shit today. I laughed at her and told her to fuck off because I didn’t believe in God or gods and she was probably as much a prophet as my left nut. Well, fuck… there you are saying stupid shit and I guess I have banana on my face now. I suppose I have to give the lady an apology now. You are as dumb as she said you were.

@Cognostic Did she also whisper how much she loved assholes and hit you up along-side the head with her rolling pin?

Huh? She had a rolling pin. Damn, I didn’t even notice. I could have jumped down there and monkey bit that bitch, stomped on her face, grabbed that roller, and had a nice Christmas gift for you, straight from the Gods! Sorry! I’ll try to pay closer attention next time.

I had assumed Bryan was being sarcastic in that post, that it was meant as irony?

Was I wrong? Blimey…

And you took my post for serious? Really?

Wow…ok, we have faith in these things because we CAN see them. We have seen proteins, and the long peptide chains they form, as well as individual atoms (and clumps of atoms). Sheesh.

Oh bugger…I really need a day off work soon…

Irony piled on another irony … maybe another layer too.

You are correct Sheldon.

You honor me with her words. I hope to be so dumb that one day I will have dumbness that will move mountains.

Without faith, nothing can be known. The atheist cannot even know something as mundane as their own birthdate without faith. This is because no human can know everything, which means ultimately something must be taken as a given or an a priori, which is another word for faith.

Confidence is Latin for “with faith”.

I can speak to many different people who witnessed my birth and all share the same story. I can reference birth records and hospital records. I can take a DNA test. I may even have a video of my birth.

I do not need “faith”, I can reference EVIDENCE.

How do you know this evidence is true?

I don’t. But it offers the best evidence available. There is very little I accept as 100% certain. Even my own birth. But with the information available to me, that offers the most likely, rational, and best explanation.

So then you don’t know your birthdate. And how do you know it is the best? Would not the truth be the best evidence?

To me, that evidence is the closest to the truth I can arrive at.

You appear to be hinting that there is a more reliable method? If so, please tell me so I can use that.
