A buddy of mine from the Army is schizophrenic.
He crashes (goes bonkers and gets put in the mental hospital against his will). They get him stabilized back on his medication in a week and send him home. He does really well for about a year. Then decides he is doing so well he doesn’t need his medication. About a year later he is going back to the hospital against his will again. He’s been doing this for about 30 years. Every time I have to watch in slow motion as he destroys himself and there is nothing I or anyone else can legally do about it (you can’t have them committed against their will until suicide/homicide threats start to surface). Basically the courts will not intervene when he starts to destroy his life, they will only intervene when he has been successful in destroying it. Rinse repeat.
