How do YOU address these Mormon beliefs?

Mmmm…so in the end of days, will the universe cease to be instantaneously or will it still have to conform to the laws of physics that ‘God’ created in the Big Bang, limiting the effects of the End to spreading at the speed of light? Which might mean taking several billions of light years to acheive…no wonder noboby is going to know…sorry, I am idly speculating while drinking too much coffee…

@21stCentury Re: “How would you address the Mormon acceptances to their faith herewith:”

Well, geeeee… Let me think… ummmm :thinking:… Well, first, I suppose I would start off with something like, “Dear Mormons,”. And then there would be a few paragraphs about this-that-and-the-other-thing. Followed by a nice closing remark or two and maybe a, “Sincerely, Tin-Man,” sign-off. (You know, just to be polite.) Then I would put it in an envelope and address it to “The Mormons”, along with the appropriate street name/number, city, state, and zip code. At least that is how things like that are typically done, as far as I know. I have to admit, I find it rather odd that you would need to visit an atheist site get that type of advice. :confused: Heck, I learned all about addressing people when I was in the second grade.

@Grinseed

Indeed. Especially Calvinists, the foundation of many of today’s sects. One of the most important principles was that of predestination.

In his seminal work 'The Protestant Ehthic and the Spirit Of Capitalism",Max Weber claims Calvinism is at the soul of capitalism (if you’ll forgive the expression)

The reasoning goes like this: God naturally favours those who are saved. Therefore, although one can’t be certain, one way of being pretty sure is to prosper in this world. Conversely ,god does not favour those who are damned. They are the poor and all manner of social unfortunates. So you don’t help them and you are free to despise them. A sentiment worth of Ayn Rand, imo

The concept of the saved and the damned led to the concept of 'The deserving poor 'in Victorian England. It remains the base of welfare systems in many developed nations. They include the US,UK and Australia. My position is that there is one and only one moral base for charity/welfare; need.

A cynical person might say that the rich and the bourgeoisie cling to that notion to remain rich and privileged, with no imperative to help others.

Only humans have to worry - the Earth did no wrong.

They believe the earth will be here for all eternity … NOW born agains and the rapture - I HAVE no idea :bulb:

Maybe your question goes to them?

I hate to burst their bubble, but our sun is roughly half way through its lifespan. And the earth’s atmosphere will either be vaporized or turn into a frigid lifeless block of ice depending on how our sun starts to die, but long before its actual end.

So the end of the universe seems something of a moot point…

Psssst :raised_hand_with_fingers_splayed: TALK to the hand sciency logic man :angry:

Jehovah said the earth is forever - SO it’s forever!!! He can do anything … AND to prove it - all dead will be resurrected to live on the earth :earth_africa:… NOW science/logic might postulate that there would be a slight over population problem … nah!

I’m told regularly by theists, unabashed by the irony, that whilst this is true, their deity cannot defy logic, which it also created.

This the same deity of course, that many theists state, committed a global genocide in the form of a global flood. It’s best plan to put one man and his extended family in a wooden boat, built by hand, with at least two of every air breathing creatures onboard.

Now does that strike anyone as a fairly unimaginative solution, for a deity that has limitless knowledge and power?

@Sheldon.

Just a guess, but that appears to be a pejorative, not a mistake. Think back to fourth grade and you will understand the required mentality.

@NewSkeptic

I had guessed as much, but was taking the high road. Which is not difficult with taunts that childish.

The moment the theitards realize the water on the earth will eventually quickly evaporate, is the moment they will twist it into “gods plan.” I don’t know how they will conflate the periphery hydrogen being burned turning the sun into a red giant, as four horseman…but I have no doubt they will try. Well, at least we will have about 3.75 billion years to tell them they are idiots.

Matthew 24:36
But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.

So Jesus was lying then?
“Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.”

Fucking asshole. I thought he knew shit!

If times were bad (last days)…if times were good…

1 Thess 5
Vs 2 “ you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.
Vs 3 “While people are saying, “Peace and safety,” destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.”

Build up to 1975 JW (in 1973) released “True Peace and Security – From What Source?” and then again in 1986 (build up to before turn of the century) another new book entitled “True Peace and Security How Can You Find It? This latter book published “coincided” with the 1986 United Nations International Year of Peace.

@Sheldon

Well actually, he/she/it/they can,so can you and I.

Logic is an unreliable tool for discovering truth. Contrary to the late Leonard Nimoy, logic rarely dictates, it usually implies.

To be clear I was repeating an oft used claim by theists, but I agree the claim is erroneous.

Tin-man,

YOUR QUOTE: “ I have to admit, I find it rather odd that you would need to visit an atheist site get that type of advice. :confused: Heck, I learned all about addressing people when I was in the second grade.”

I am sorry that you are acting as though you are still in the infamous Emily thread with the “put downs,” and other demeaning discourse that was thrown about, remember? You are missing the point, where I am asking how would one address the “outer space” Mormon beliefs as listed in my initial post. I am asking this because I have a debate coming up with 2 Mormons, and I always like to add to my quiver on any religious topic in being over prepared.

Thanks anyway for “trying” to address the real questions at hand.
