If you went back in time a hundred years and visited a university teaching chemistry or another science, you would be be able to discern a vast difference in what they practice and know, compared to today. They learn, they advance.
If you visit a religious center for theology or anything training in religion from a hundred years ago, they would be saying the same things and using the same practices as today. Religion, with the exception to accommodate societal and legal pressures, has not changed.
I am willing to venture that if I visited a hundred religious teachers and asked for better understanding, they would all tell me to read the bible, and attend their bible studies.
Go and try that out, give it the acid test. Go to your leader of your congregation, ask him you desire to learn more.
