Getting my hopes up

Yes particularly here in the 21st century we need more extensive qualifications for high office than “nice smile and persuasive charm”, which is basically all it really is. And actually Trump doesn’t even have the nice smile, and he is persuasive only to a certain audience – which, apparently way too many of us have become.

In theory, the electorate would not elect a clearly unqualified dolt, but we now know that isn’t remotely true in any way we could count on. And that much of the electorate is ignorant of boring stuff like the Constitution, democracy, and the rule of law.

Hell, they don’t even want the obvious stuff like higher wages – according to the theory of sado-populism, they just want others to hurt more than they do.

sado-populism You summed it up nicely. I hope the term catches on.

I’d love to take credit for that one but I heard it second hand – supposedly uttered by a sociologist being interviewed on a podcast somewhere.

I’m rather new here and looking around came across your post. As for the Epstein files, it’s apparent Trump does not want them released. We’ll never see/read the files in their entirety.

This is a bit of an aside from Epstein but then again maybe not. What is anyone’s thought on this: 37 US States Require A Loyalty Oath To Israel. 37 US States Require A Loyalty Oath To Israel., a video on Bitchute. This isn’t new news, I only came across it today. It’s been as far back as Nixon and maybe prior. For myself I don’t understand why anyone would agree to be loyal to any country who aligns with the outright murder of innocent persons, especially children. Possibly no such country exists.

This comes mostly from “Christian Zionism”, something unique to the US so far as I know.

Zionism proper is a movement within Judaism that advocates (with varying levels of aggressiveness) the establishment of a Jewish homeland in Palestine. It has origins way back in the 19th century when the reconstituting the nation of Isreal was just a dream.

Christian Zionism is the belief, mostly within the same fundamentalist sects that gave us Christian Nationalism, that God plans to ultimately “save” Israel, and then posits two key points in relation to this: (1) god will bless those who bless Israel and curse those who curse Israel as a national entity and (2) in order for the salvation of Israel to be realized, certain “prophesies” must be “fulfilled”, most basically the restoration of the nation of Israel, the reconstruction of the Temple in Jerusalem and the restarting of the ancient temple sacrifice system (for those who care to look into the nuttery further, this properly involves special “red heifers” which some rich Texan has been breeding in order to ship them to Israel at the proper time).

At any rate, Christian Zionists see the “fulfillment” of these things as something that also hastens the End of Days, the Rapture, and the establishment of the Kingdom of God on earth. They actually care very little for Israel as such, so much as they care to cater to what they see as a divine command to honor and support Israel (and an implied threat if they don’t), and a means to an end: the culmination of all their fever dreams of world hegemony and the ultimate triumph of Christianity, including the Jews finally admitting that they were wrong and Jesus really was / is the Messiah.

The Israelis of course think this is all risible hogwash, but find the Christian Zionists to be useful fools, so they cater to them, to the point of even allowing them to establish a museum in Jerusalem that supposedly documents the rituals, instruments and processes of the Temple sacrifice system so as to have an operations manual ready for the appropriate time, etc.

What the Israelis get out of it is almost no-strings-attached US weaponry, an almost blank check to annihilate the Palestinians, and in the case of the Netenyahu regime aid in assaulting Iran whenever they want to, etc. It has created a political environment in the US where any substantive criticism of the secular Israeli state or its corrupt government is seen as tantamount to anti-semitism.

I doubt that the average Congress-critter is fully aware of all these dynamics; they simply know that they exist, and they either beat the drum for Israel or at least are afraid to criticize them. Hilarity ensues.

It does seem rather unlikely we’ll see anything really bad pertaining to Trump while he’s still in power. Sighhhhhhh. I have to stop hoping. I’m edging closer to existential nihilism everyday. Still, some cracks do seem to be forming in the unflagging loyalty to Trump.

Wait … thirty seven US states require a loyalty oath to a foreign state?

This is madness.

Actually, it’s a testament to the power of lobbying Washington for over 6 decades.

AIPAC (formerly the American Zionist Committee for Public Affairs) Got it’s start beck in the mid 1950’s as a response to Eisenhower’s stance on Israel. After the Suez Crisis in 1956 Eisenhower was adamant about Israel withdrawing from the Sinai Peninsula. This did not sit well with Israel, as you might imagine.

After the 6 Day War in 1967 they came into their own. This was during the Cold War when the Soviets had already signed up most of the Arab world. America wanted a satellite in the middle east and Israel was there to oblige.

In 1980 Tom Dine took executive control of AIPAC and went to work. He forced successful primary challenges to opposing congressmen, increased membership in the organization almost seven fold and increased their operating budget nearly 2200%. He was also instrumental in moving US aid from a loan basis to the grant model you see today.

Politicians are devoted to their own self interest and survival. Lobbyists depend on this, especially when they can exploit it to their advantage. They were just really good at it.

i have a feeling some people just want the epstein files released so they can cherry pick some democrats in the list and find a way to generalize that ALL democrats are present in the epstein files

Doubtless, since some of them have actually expressed the fantasy that there will be nothing but Democrats in there – despite it being a “hoax” created by … Democrats.

I want everyone in there to get outed, regardless of party. That is something partisan Republicans can’t understand. It’s non-partisan that you don’t rape underage children.

Unless you have more money than God along with political influence. Even the legislation demanding the release of the Epstein file carries no penalty for non-compliance.

There have been amicus briefs filed, but until an actual victim files a motion, there is no injured party to demand compliance or force action to comply.

Best legal system money can buy.
