Fascinating stuff.
It’s over 50 years since I was at school.
First commandment from Exodus:
And God spoke all these words:
2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
3 “You shall have no other gods before[a] me.
4 “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments."
Interestingly, that commandment supports recent archaeology which has demonstrated that Judaism was still polytheistic until at least the third century bce.
Trivia; The Torah does not number the commandments, of which there are 613, not just ten.
At my Catholic boys school we were actively discouraged from reading the bible “lest you become confused”. So naturally I read the whole thing at age 16. The full ten commandments are clearly laid out in Exodus. I’ve never seen the catechism’s ten commandments as censorship merely as edited for length. As far as I’m aware the church*** has never attempted to censor the bible, it simply invents its own interpretations. This practice is called biblical hermeneutics. its purpose is to prove the bible doesn’t actually mean what it says .Also to prove it’s right when it’s actually wrong. My favourite is arguing that Jesus was the messiah . A few minutes looking at actual Jewish prophecy shows why Jesus could not possibly have been the messiah
(((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((9)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
**the church today called "the catholic church’ (western and eastern rites) was simply ‘the church’ until the protestant reformation in the sixteenth century…
PS: if you’re interested in the history of Christianity, I recommend “Paul, The Mind Of The Apostle” by A N Wilson. He’s a popular historian so easy to read. However, he’s a trained scholar . (Rugby School, and Oxford university)
