Another reason I like Windows is because it traces its ancestry back to Windows NT, which was developed by Dave Cutler, the same guy responsible for VMS and RSX11M on the VAX and PDP-11. I worked with both of these back in the day. My first job entailed, among other things, writing device drivers for the VAX, both for VMS and BSD 4.x. The major difference was VMS drivers were written in MACRO-32, VMS’s assembly language, and BSD drivers were written in C. Personally, I preferred writing in assembly.
Heh, I actually have a license for OpenVMS. It’s for a VMS running on an emulated VAX in a virtual machine. I haven’t managed to get it up and running yet, as the documentation seems to require more knowledge about VAX and VMS than I possess. But one of these days…
I cut my teeth on HP-UX, Irix, Digital UNIX, and Ultrix. So I could say the same about Linux, which traces it spiritual ancestry back to Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie, who created the first Unix ![]()
Pity I was unable to record the ending for ITV News here in the UK, after the reports on Venezuela, Greenland and Iran. When a paid newsreader on a British news channel, signs off in a manner that strongly suggests he’s saying “what sort of a mad world am I living in?” without actually using those words, you know that disturbingly large sections of humanity are basket cases.
NOTE:
Let’s take the operating system conversation over to its own thread or continue it in a dm. Thx.
Can you move the relevant posts to a new thread?
Here’s Trump’s response to the Minneapolis murder of a woman by ICE:
He must have watched a different video than I did, because the car didn’t come close to running any brownshirts over, and his claim that the agent is “recovering in the hospital” is an outright lie because the murderer is seen casually walking around after the shooting. Trump’s gaslighting will only work on his cult, and even they are starting to realize everything he says is a lie.
Nope. You’ll just have to carry it on in a new thread with any additional posts on the subject
yep it has always sucked, and therefore (as long as it is backwards compatible) it will always suck
Are they though? I can believe that some small percentage is being peeled off. There’s a reformed Jan 6 insurrectionist who is performing a kind of absolution by speaking out against Jan 6 revisionism for instance. Marjorie Taylor Greene, while still a terrible person, has at least figured out there are political opportunities in opposing Trump, and many of her colleagues, while still power-hungry cowards, have sensed it’s time to jump ship. There’s a serious possibility the GOP will loose the house majority even before the midterms.
But … the basic dynamic of MAGA is the desire to see people who disagree with your ideology suffer, even if you suffer to a degree. I suspect a lot of those people don’t care that Trump lies to them, so long as he keeps “owning the libs”. I sure hope I’m wrong.
Also it occurs to me that Trump’s post here about the woman murdered by an ICE agent and transforming it into its fantasy opposite is for the benefit of that far too large portion of its base that get all their news from him and his lackeys and embrace that alternate reality as opposed to, ya know, maybe viewing the video for themselves. The kind of people who listened to InfoWars when it did the exact same things.
Several MAGAts I’ve spoken with recently are acknowledging they made a mistake by supporting Trump. That’s only a handful here in a deep blue state, so I’m sure the percentage seeing the light elsewhere is likely to be miniscule, but we have to start somewhere. With each Trump outrage, a few more will be chipped away from MAGA. This will increase exponentially when the economy starts to tank and people start to feel real pain–even they can’t deny what they see and experience with their own eyes. They’re already seeing this to some extent every time they go grocery shopping.
I’m sure also that many of them are just now finding out their ACA premiums doubled or quadrupled or whatever. The question is whether Trump will just claim, say, that it’s Joe Biden’s fault (or his BS about people paying doctors directly with some token government stipend) and they’ll believe it. IDK.
I really want you to be right on this one, lol.
But I read today an analysis of the public approval of Western world leaders in general and they are all underwater (UK, Europe, etc) because structurally they just all fail to improve people’s lives because they live in terror of the flight of capital should they upset the oligarchs and big corporate interests. There isn’t a single one who isn’t deep into negative territory (apparently Macron is in the worst shape at the moment, even worse than Starmer).
Trump on the other hand has a relatively modest -7 rating because he’s channeling people’s rage at the machine. Maybe he’s given them false hope but it’s hope all the same. Also he seems at least to be burning the system down and there’s a misplaced thinking that this will let something better rise from the ashes. Overlooking that it may well get us all killed first.
This is a chaotic / complex situation that could go either way, or even several ways at once.
BREAKING: U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents has shot two people in Portland - ABC
Details are still slim, but I suspect this incident is similar to the one in Minneapolis where ICE claims the driver of the car somehow “weaponized their vehicle” and threatened one of the brownshirts, “forcing” them to open fire.
Given the regime’s response to the Minneapolis incident, I wouldn’t be surprised if this emboldens other brownshirts to open fire at vehicles and claim it’s justified because they were somehow at risk.
IMHO, far too many questions around the Minneapolis situation remain.
Hope is held out for an objective investigation but ai think we’ll likely see multiple concurrent ones. When the White House and DHS have already created a narrative then the federal investigations might be presumed a poisoned well.
I see a second, state investigation because this.
Shouldn’t he have a cat in his lap and a spinny chair at this point?
The Orange Scrotum wouldn’t recognise genuine morality, if it backed an M1 Abrams main battle tank into his ribcage.
His level of “understanding” grinds to a halt as “I want, therefore I will take”. What passes for “morality” in the increasingly prion-riddled space in his head, is nothing more than the craving of the hungry Velociraptor mutated into capitalist transaction.
Meanwhile, ICEstapo keeps racking up the evidence that will lead to its eventual prosecution as a criminal organisation …
ICStapo goon shoots pastor in the face with a pepper ball
You may not agree with Bautista’s religion, but you have to respect his standing up to the Orange Scrotum’s Dirlewanger Brigade.
On the one hand, the ICE agents are sent in to do a job, however questionable the job or the orders they have been given might be. On the other hand, judging from the cases that have been covered in the media, the job they actually do reeks of incompetence not only on the part of the individual agents, but also all the way up to the top management. If the agents were actually trained personell, it testifies to an abysmal training standard and agency discipline. Can the US ever recover from Trump 2?
